Health officials consider future of sex offenders in overcrowded prison
Earlier this week, News 10 told you about concerns over the future of 71 violent sex offenders, most of whom are pedophiles.
The men have served their sentences, but are considered too dangerous to be released. They are currently under the care of the Department of Mental Health, but the prison where they’re being housed is running out of space.
A committee met Friday to review the sexual predator law. Under the current law, there is no provision for follow-up treatment after offenders are allowed back into society.
Forensic Psychiatrist Pam Crawford thinks follow-up treatment increases community safety, “I think it’s an illusion to think that when you have this big lock-up hospital, that makes the state safer, because there are so many people who are not and are put in there because they don’t quit meet the standards or discharged the community. The outpatient option makes it safer.”
Doctors say continued treatment will likely decrease the chances of offending again.
