Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), managed by Cleveland Clinic holds a public lecture on Obesity under the title of “Walking Away from Obesity” on 16 March 2010 in the auditorium of SKMC from 05:15 pm to 06:15 pm. The invitation is extended to all patients and the public. SKMC is owned and operated by SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The lecture will comprise of a presentation and then a question and answer session. It will cover all essential topics in fighting obesity and promoting a healthy lifestyle. Diseases related to obesity will also be discussed. The lecture will be presented by Dr. Abdelrahman Nimeri, Director of the Bariatric & Metabolic Institute - Abu Dhabi of SKMC and Dr. Mohammed Al-Haddad, Specialist Surgeon at the Bariatric & Metabolic Institute - Abu Dhabi of SKMC.

The lecture is intended to raise awareness regarding the many issues related to obesity and provide attendees with information regarding the danger of obesity. Furthermore, it will be an opportunity for those who may be considered to be morbidly obese people to find out about some of the medical and surgical treatments options. In addition, the physicians will explain to the audience the potential complications of bariatric surgery. No pre-registration is required to attend the presentation and the auditorium`s doors will be open starting from 04:30 pm.

Dr. Nimeri stated, “During the health talk, the presentation will take around 10 minutes and the following 50 minutes will be dedicated to answer the audience’s questions. The invitation is directed to the public from all ages, and we highly encourage them to attend this gathering to help raise their awareness about healthy lifestyles and obesity prevention.”

Since Bariatric Surgery started at SKMC in June 2009, 28 bariatric surgeries were successfully performed for patients who had an extended history of obesity and diseases related to obesity such as diabetes and hypertension, and had a Body Mass Index (BMI) of more than 40 kg/m².
