Lenient parents tied to teenage ecstasy use: study

Teenagers are more likely to experiment with the ecstasy drug if they have grown up with lenient, indulgent parents, according to a study on Thursday.

Poor discipline and control were associated with taking ecstasy, and lack of parental warmth during childhood was also a factor, researchers from Liverpool John Moore University found.

“There is increased dosage among those who rate their parents as less controlling and neglectful,” researcher Catharine Montgomery told Reuters.

She said the correlation was with increased doses of ecstasy, a younger age at first use and longer-term use.

Montgomery’s team studied 85 ecstasy users and 83 non-users between the ages of 18-25.
