New drug benefit will save states billions, US says

U.S. states will save an estimated $8 billion in the first five years of new federal prescription drug benefits for seniors that start in 2006, health regulators said on Friday.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said the savings would come from the transfer of Medicaid patients to Medicare for drug benefits, subsidies for retiree drug benefits and other assistance.
