October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

According to the Philippine Cancer Society, Inc. (PCSI), breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women in the Philippines today. In 2001, some 9,000 new cases were detected and 3,000 deaths reported. This year, an estimated 14,000 new cases and 6,360 deaths are expected.

The report shows that a majority of breast cancer cases are diagnosed quite late. Inadequate awareness and fear of this disease are primary reasons for this high incidence of breast cancer.

Cancer specialists advise women to avail themselves of regular breast examinations because early detection and treatment radically improves one’s chances of recovery from this disease.

The Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS) has launched its anti-breast cancer project. Dubbed “SSS - Sariling Salat sa Suso” (Self-Breast Examination) Project, it encourages women to have regular clinical and diagnostic examinations at least once a month or after their menstrual period.

This year’s theme “Early Detection Saves Lives” encapsulates the extreme importance of early detection of breast cancer. Mammography, chemotherapy, and surgery are the present means of treating breast cancer. The efficacy of these methods can be maximized by having a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Every woman in our country needs to know well what breast cancer is. How to detect its early signs are vital. Saving a woman’s life means saving the future of her family, for women, especially mothers, are major pillars of our society.
