Health trust is among best for diabetes care

SCARBOROUGH health trust has scored highly in a recent report which compares diabetes services for children and young people across the region.

The report, undertaken by the University of Leeds, looks at services between 2007 and 2009 and shows that the trust is the second best performing in the Yorkshire and Humber region, with only Calderdale scoring better.

Dr Udupa Venkatesh is Scarb orough health trust’s paediatric consultant with special interest in diabetes, and is supported by Suzanne Wright, paediatric diabetic nurse and Anne Walker, paediatric dietitian and Dr Tim Hopkirk, the associate specialist.

Dr Venkatesh said: “What these results mean is that we are seen to be managing our patients and their condition extremely well.

“The report also acknowledges that we are delivering an excellent service to our patients, despite being less well resourced than other larger trusts.

“These results are a testament to the team that we have here at Scarborough. We work very much as a team to ensure we give our patients the best possible care.”

Suzanne Wright added: “When a child is diagnosed with diabetes there is a lot for the child and family to deal with.

“These results are very encouraging and show that we are providing a service which allows patients and their parents to mange their diabetes effectively, so that they can get on with their day-to-day lives.”

The trust treats around 80 children and young people with diabetes each year.
