Definition

Stress gastritis is the sudden appearance of gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining) with ulcers and hemorrhaging, which may occur following burns, shock, trauma, or critical illness.

Unlike the typical peptic ulcer, stress ulcers may first be recognized by gastrointestinal bleeding.
