Roche’s Xenical weight loss drug is significantly more effective than diet alone in reducing weight and improving cardiovascular risk factors in patients with metabolic syndrome, Roche said.

Roche said in a statement on Thursday that more than half of the patients who received extended Xenical treatment no longer had metabolic syndrome at the end of the study period, an analysis of 20 global studies showed.

Metabolic syndrome is a collection of health risks that increase the odds of developing Heart disease, Stroke and Diabetes.

Patients on Xenical lost more than twice as much weight as those on diet alone, Roche said.
